Parade of Champions/Desfile de Campeaos - Sambodromo, February 8, 2008

Every year in February and/or March, the city of Rio De Janeiro goes crazy for a few weeks to celebrate Carnaval. In addition to the many street parties - or blocos - there exists the massive, 2 day parade of 14 different competing Samba Schools at the worlds greatest parade stadium, the Sambodromo.

After the 2 days of competition, the top 5 are chosen to compete the following Friday in the
Desfile de Campeaos - or Parade of Champions.

The samba schools, which come from all over the city, compete with chosing
the best theme, producing from scratch the most elaborate costumes and floats,
as well as the best dancers, celebrity queens to lead the school, and baterias - or drum corps.

Everyone in the city is encouraged to participate in the festivities by dressing up, taking part in the bloco parades in the various neighborhoods as well as go all night at many of the improv beach parties that take place.
